Colin's visit to the garden; Dickon tells him there is a spell to help him. Mary recalls a chant from India, and the translation. All of them begin circling Colin and chanting, including Martha...



...and are soon joined by the dreamers

Colin slowly stands, and even takes a step, but it does not last very long. He has been bedridden for years. Ben Weatherstaff appears, and Colin reverts to his nasty self. Ben has been tending the garden against orders for all but the last two years.


Colin swears them all to secrecy about his improvement until he is well.

Lily, Rose and Albert appear in the garden and sing “A bit of Earth”.


Mrs. Winthrop, from the school Neville has selected, and has arrived to meet Mary and evaluate her character. Mary comes in as requested, and dislikes Mrs.Winthrop so much she throws a full-blown tantrum...

...tearing up the papers, stomping on Mrs. Winthrop's foot, and finally flailing on the ground. “What you have here is a medical problem!” spits Mrs. Winthrop as she storms from the room.


You have choices in your life, Mary; Colin does not. If you push him too hard, he could die. In effect, his life is in your hands.

Martha convinces Mary that it might help to write to her uncle Archie in Paris.
