Reverend Hale arrives, and attempts to calm the situation with law and logic.

When Tituba is brought in, Abigail seems frightened and begins to blame everything on the slave.

Tituba is stunned, and explains that the girls asked her to perform rituals for them.

Confronted by Reverend Hale, held by Reverend Parris, Tituba sees confession as her best bet, and tries to say what they need to hear.

In the end, she confesses to making a pact with the devil.

She seems almost entranced, as she tells everyone of her “misdeeds”.

At home, John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth attempt civil conversation...

...which inevitably turns to his past dalliance with Abigail Williams.

Mary Warren, absent from her work all day, confronts Proctor about being treated as a child.


Reverend Hale arrives at the house, and after a few minutes pleasantries, tells them Elizabeth's name has come up in the court.
